Mobile phone manufacturers are working to make their handsets easier to use now they have a large number of functions. Motorola’s Synergy interface was not designed for multimedia, and the company is now bringing out a Java/Linux based environment for its key models…”It supports over 600 functions from playing an MP3 file to composing a text message, and sets out what the company calls ‘golden paths’ – intuitive routes through all the functions, using single buttons and softkeys – for navigation.”
The situation is likely to affect companies that create interface software, such as browser-makers Opera and Openwave. The article also casually mentioned a deal between Nokia and Apple which I missed…late last week the two companies announced they have been working together to create an open-source browser for the mobile market. The new browser will be in the Series 60 phones, include WebCore and JavaScriptCore and will use the same open-source components of the Safari product.
