Exchange4Media.com: After the success of .IN domain name registration, Department of Information Technology and NIXI are planning to roll out the registration of Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) within seven to eight months, Dr Govind, Director, Department of IT, confirmed this to exchange4media.
IDNs are domain names or web addresses represented by regional language characters like Hindi, Telugu. The proposal may transform the way people look at Internet in India and bring it closer to the common man as he can now navigate and communicate online in his preferred script, not necessarily English. “Though there is significant content in regional languages in India, still IDNs have been a far cry, unlike countries like Japan and China,” observed Deepak Maheswari, Secretary, ISPAI.
