The Economic Times: A global research centre on Wi-Max or wireless Internet technology will be set up in Chennai next month through a joint venture between C-DoT of the Department of Telecom and French telecom major Alcatel, Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran announced on Saturday. The Wi-Max technology will facilitate wireless Internet connections over a large area and is especially suited for providing connectivity to rural areas, Maran said, launching a telemedicine programme of a private hospital here. “This will be a joint venture between Alcatel and C-DoT,” he said, adding that Wi-Max would also help in providing the emergency tele-medical care to the rural masses.
