BellSouth, the No. 3 U.S. local telephone company, plans a limited launch of a new IPTV service in 2006, said the CTO at Reuters TCS summit.
It is in lab trials with Microsoft’s IPTV software, but has not committed to a broad roll-out to customers. Bill Smith, who declined to provide more details, said the company had chosen to be more cautious with its video plans, but that BellSouth was “doing every bit as much as everyone else in this area.”
BellSouth’s peers, Verizon and SBC plan to broadly launch their own IPTV service next year, eventually targeting tens of millions of households.
