Tivo is supposed to launch its download service soon, in association with Netflix, presumably. Engadget has some screenshots of the yet-to-be-launched service…it’s still the same TiVo interface with the option of downloading a show rather than just recording it.
Staci adds: Meanwhile, TiVo’s stock is taking a beating today because, during Wednesday’s Reuters Summit, DirecTV CEO Chase Carey finally said what has been inevitable for months: DirecTV will stop marketing TiVo DVRs in the fall in favor of branded DVRs from NDS Group, also a News Corp.-controlled company. The NDS DVRs will move DirecTV closer to the VOD model it needs to comepte with cable, allowing the satellite company to stuff the larger hard drives with programming that can be called up on demand. DirecTV’s agreement with TiVo continues through 2007; the satellite provider accounts for two-thirds of TiVo’s subscribers. DirecTV has yet to clarify how current TiVo subs will fare after the agreement.
By the way, most of the set-top reliant, nifty new TiVo offerings aren’t available to those of us with DirecTV TiVos.
