LG Electronics has joined the crowd offering mobile devices for children…”LG’s device features a tiny, black-and-white screen, two stubby antennas and only a handful of buttons-including a button for 911 calls. According to the FCC filing, which includes references to Verizon Wireless, the CDMA phone features “simple functions and small size for children.”
There are two main camps targeting the kids market — those (like LG and Enfora) who are offering phones that are incredibly restricted and have no (or very little) content. These are targeted at parents who see mobiles as a safety device and are worried about their kids running up large bills or being marketed to.
The other camp sees mobiles as an entertainment device to occupy children on car trips and such. These phones generally come with a lot of childrens content, the best of which is educational.
I think the two markets will happily coexist…
