Following yesterday’s reports, Charter Communications made it official: AOL Business Access chief Neil Smit is the company’s fourth president and CEO in five years. Smit starts his new job Aug 22, the day before Charter’s annual meeting. He has his work cut out for him at the company’s fourth-largest MSO, still struggling with the complicated debt structure used to pull it together. As we noted earlier, Smit doesn’t have cable experience but the company already has that and can hire more. He certainly knows what it’s like to remake a consumer company facing challenges to its core business. The real trick may be getting along with Chairman Paul Allen.
Charter’s my hometown MSO so it’s to my advantage if this works out; I can testify to the company’s need to revamp customer service and make the most of its technology.
