Reuters Will Charge For Mobile News Alerts

Reuters is expanding its U.S. mobile offerings with the aid of M-Qube — I’m sure sister site MoCoNews.net will have more details — but I’m having a hard time believing one feature is going to be a huge success: a $2.99 per month subscription for an average 2-3 SMS breaking news alerts a week. With all of the services that can be set up to message your cell phone why pay for this one?
The Reuters ringtone is free; images are $2 a pop. The new Reuters WAP siteis free; breaking news will cost. They get some credit for trying different models … maybe I’m off base and the SMS news alerts will bring in a plethora of subs but it just doesn’t ring right.
