AOL has acquired mobile phone software company Wildseed and will make it part of a new unit focusing on cell phone services. According to its site, Wildseed provides “SmartSkin interactive accessories” that “stylize handsets from the inside out allowing consumers to customize their phones and ‘make it their own.'” The apps have proven popular with teens and, combined with content from AOL.com., could make a good one-two punch with that age group.
AOL Wireless GM Craig Eisler told USAToday: “We believe that wireless is one of the biggest places for AOL to play in … (the Wildweed deal) “enables us to offer new products like instant messaging for phones, and great photo and music experiences for phones.” He added, “We were late to the party with search and mail, although we have it now. … we want to change the game and take it to the next level.” No terms released.
