News Corporation and The Associated Press have formed a joint venture named Stats, LLC to produce sports data and content. The JV will combine Stats Inc., owned by News Corporation, and MegaSports, AP’s multimedia sports service, and both companies will own half of the new company. The new company will keep providing sports stats broadband, wireless and internet firms, game developers and fantasy sports providers and print media and wire services.
Packaging and sales of sports information for AP members will continue to be done at AP.
Gary Walrath, the CEO of the old company will still be the CEO in the new venture.
AP: News Corp.’s STATS Inc. is the largest provider of sports information in the country, and AP’s MegaSports is the second-largest, followed by SportsTicker Enterprises LP, a division of Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN unit.
