As I wrote back in February, AOL had been very keen on buying the online media/files storage company Xdrive…well, now it has bought it, for an undisclosed sum. The Santa Monica-based company will operate as a stand alone subsidiary of AOL under the “Digital Services” business unit and continue to be based in here. No layoffs are plannned at the 34-person company.
In January, AOL announced that it has increased the amount of online storage space–for its service called “My Storage”–it offers customers to 100MB. The idea is to allow users to share these media/music files…and XDrive fits well into the growing digital media files ecosphere for AOL. Also in February, XDrive launched a new music service that allows people to listen to their digital music collections through any Treo phone, Palm, Tungsten, or Sony Clie PDA.
The service stores the user’s music collection through the Xdrive online Internet site and streams audio through their cell phone connection.
This is the first major announced acquisition by AOL since last year’s acquisition of Advertising.com, BlackVoices and Mailblocks.
