Pick’N’Use Technology Shelved

This sounds like a really good idea: “IXI launched in 2001 with its personal mobile gateway product, which the company proffered to wireless carriers and handset makers. The technology would allow users to buy a low-end, Bluetooth-capable mobile phone and then connect it to accessories like a camera or keyboard. The goal was to allow users to mix and match wireless accessories to suit their tastes, rather than buying expensive all-in-one wireless devices.” Unfortunately deals with Samsung and Sanyo didn’t come to much, and the rumored interest of Motorola disappeared when Motorola found out IXI wanted to charge it a $10-per-device fee for its technology, a price that killed the deal.
