For another sign that the U.S. Supreme Court’s Grokster decision didn’t resolve as much as Hollywood and the RIAA would have liked, read John Markoff’s latest about more technically sophisticated P2P projects underway. Irish software developer Ian Clarke tried to punch through regulatory barriers several years ago with his Freenet; he’s updating that vision now. Clarke and others envision darknets — tight, usually anonymous P2P networks where users are recommended on a trust basis. For every one of these efforts we’re hearing about, just imagine how many are out there.
