Movie Trailers — From Banner Ad To Mobile

A new internet banner ad developed by Tangozebra enables users to “enter their phone number directly into the ad to get a 30-second video trailer sent to their mobile”. United International Pictures (UIP) is using the ad to promote the horror film The Skeleton Key. The benefit for the studio is obvious…the ability to forward the trailer means that it’s possible to get a viral campaign going.
I’m of two minds whether this will be a benefit to consumers…on the one hand if you’re online you may as well watch the video online, sending it to your mobile to watch there is a little silly. On the other hand if the trailer is good enough you may want to see it on your mobile, and to pass it on to people.
Also, multi-channel film retailer Filmnight will launch a mobile entertainment portal in the fourth quarter of this year. The company currently provides content to Vodafone 3G but “We want to dominate the off-portal space as a film brand, as all the operators are now moving to support off-portal,” said Filmnight MD Shashi Fernando.
