Samsung has tied up with XM Satellite Radio to develop portable MP3 players that will also work as satellite radios– thereby playing both recorded XM programming and MP3 audio files. But don’t get too excited..it is, in essence, a syncing deal: “The two players won’t receive XM programming directly. Instead they will come with home docking stations that receive XM’s satellite broadcasts and store them on the players. Users will also be able to transfer digital music files from their computer.”
Also today, XM has announced a deal with Starbucks to launch a series of CD compilations with the coffee giant’s Hear Music unit..
The third deal was with Napster, which will let XM subscribers buy and download songs through an exclusive arrangement with the online music store. When asked if XM and Samsung are working toward mobile phones with satellite radio receivers, Panero said, “We’re looking forward to having the relationship evolve into other devices.”
