MPEG-LA Begins DVB-H Licensing Process

MPEG LA LogoMPEG-LA, the patent organization which is still arguing with the mobile industry over the licensing price of the OMA DRM standard, has indicated it plans to form a one-stop shop for licensing patents for the DVB-H mobile broadcast TV standard.
“The initial group of essential patent holders included France Telecom, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.), Philips, and Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC). Evaluation of patents for their essentiality to the DVB-H standard submitted by other parties continues in order to include as much essential intellectual property as possible in one license for the benefit of the marketplace.”
I wonder if this will see the same showdown over license fees as the DRM standard…I’m also wondering why they took so long to get their act together. The DVB-H standard has been around for quite a while, but only recently have there been a large number of trials begun using the technology…(via The Mind Trap)
