The interesting part of this article about British youth using mobile phones to “spit” into mobile phones while making grime music — a blend of garage and rap — is the note that the people using the technology are not necessarily using it in the ways the operators expected, or wanted. Rather than downloading songs via the network they are downloading instrumental music and transferring it to the phone via Bluetooth or infrared… “Friends hang out outside, “spitting in groups around the streets,” said music producer Joelle Reefer.”
The music is shared quickly through bluetooth…and for free. Whether this particular trend will catch on or not is beyond my ken, but it supporst the idea that the technology which will be the most successful is that which allows people to create their own technology and communicate with a social group.
