Media General, the Richmond, Va.-based media publishing company (owner of Tampa Tribune), has made a strange acquisition: it has bought out Dallas-based advergaming and online casual gaming company Blockdot. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Blockdot was founded in 2001, and among the early firms which went into advergaming. It also runs a network of casual game sites, including its flagship site, Kewlbox.com
Media General’s interactive division has about 50 sites for its newspapers and TV stations. It had revenues of $13.9 million in 2004. For the latest Q2 it had a loss of $0.98 million, on revenues of $4.9 million.
The logic for the acquisition: “Blockdot will play an important role in Media General’s commitment to build successful interactive enterprises that are innovative, entertaining, informative and profitable.”
