The Mobile Web Initiative (part of the World Wide Web Consortium (WC3)) has expressed concern over advertising in mobile phone content…or more specifically, over traditional web advertising ported to mobile phones. “When you’re paying for traffic download costs, suddenly getting 40% rich media ads wouldn’t be fair.” Of particular concern are pop-ups, which would take consumers away from the site they are visiting.
While these would be a concern I don’t think anyone would be stupid enough to try and implement these systems on pages for mobile devices, although I suppose you can’t assume anything with some people. Consumers will probably vote with their thumbs — there will be a lot less tolerance for unwanted ads on mobiles than there is on the web. Of course, if Opera continues gaining mobile market share consumers will simply turn on the “block pop-ups ” option.
