O2 will launch the i-Mode service in the UK later this year, and believes i-Mode is better tha WAP because it aligns closer with internet protocols. “I-Mode today uses XHTML Mobile Profile, which is based on the newest revision of HTML, allowing developers to easily build sites that can be viewed on both PCs and phones…”I-Mode is not as proprietary as people think,” Minhas said. “If you go right back to the roots of HTML, i-Mode is more standard. WAP took a different path with Wireless Markup Language [WML], which makes it very difficult for developers to take a web site and make it work on a phone.”
The article points out that businesses may be put off using the service because they’d be restricted to one carrier, but I’m pretty sure DoCoMo has licensed i-Mode to only one carrier in each region.
