Disney Brand MVNO En Route — Finally

The long-awaited Disney-brand MVNO is finally slated to be announced Wednesday, according to the Wall Street Journal. As is the case with ESPN, Sprint will provide the network. ESPN was the first Disney company to announce a virtual mobile network but this one could happen before the sports version gets off the ground. ESPN Mobile initially was slated for a holiday launch but execs have said they’d rather get it right than do it fast, making an early 2006 launch more likely. But the family-oriented Disney version shouldn’t be as complicated to launch — not as many complex content deals as ESPN — and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it in time for the 2005 holiday season. It’s certainly been on the drawing board long enough. I first talked it with Disney president and COO Bob Iger last December and since then have heard from other Disney execs that it was just a matter of time. One more thought: Firefly Mobile already has a nifty line up of phones for children; a hook up with Disney could make a lot of sense.
