Wisconsin Firm Plans To Launch Online Video Recorder In India

The Business Journal of Milwaukee: Anil Gupte, founder and president of Brown Deer, Wisconsin-based Keen Inc., is visiting India for launching a digital video recording product he hopes will eventually be able to compete with TiVo in the United States. Gupte, who founded iCinema (which provides online video streaming of movies produced in India) in 1999, plans to roll out his yet-to-be-named product within the next two months in Mumbai, where he has opened an office with four employees.
The video recording product, which is housed in a case similar to a conventional videocassette recorder, will be able to record video content from both the Internet and television. “This is like a second-generation TiVo product,” Gupte said.
Gupte created the software for which he has five patents pending with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The software enables the recording and playback of video content. The product is being introduced in India because of a lack of competing products there and because marketing costs are cheaper, Gupte said. He wants to introduce the device in the United States within six months and expects to sell 50,000 units within two years. The product’s cost in India will be equivalent to $400 and is projected to generate revenues of several million dollars over the next year to 15 months, Gupte said.
