The hypothesis put forward in this article is that there are two distinct paths mobile game companies can take. The first is to go after the ‘casual gamer’ with simple puzzle games, which is fairly easy to do but it’s difficult to differentiate one game from all the others. The second is to produce console-style games, which are each different and attract an audience that are willing to pay more, but are more difficult to produce and the audience is smaller. I guess this seems a tad obvious… I think there is a third style of game, the straight strategy game. It’s more complicated than the puzzle games but doesn’t need fantastic grapics — in fact it could be text-based. There’s a lot of this style on the web, but most of them are free so they don’t get much press…
