A detailed story on issues Google is facing and will face in the future in its plans to index video. The usual issues of content control, DRM and rights come into play. It is all borderline, and Google’s position on this is similar to its other forays: let’s do everything and see what sticks on the wall.
Late last year, Google started recording TV programs aired in the San Francisco area without asking permission from program owners. And it used stills from that indexing in its video search service. Among others, NBC is not happy, and has sent a stern letter that stopped just short of a formal cease-and-desist letter. Also, Warner Bros. studio and the producers of “Dr. Phil,” a program owned by Viacom’s King World unit, wrote or called Google to demand that it keep their content off the service, according to the story.
Executives at ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC say they are still in talks with Google about the video service.
