Vodafone Content Chief Slams "Crap" Mobile Games

Vodafone global content boss Graeme Ferguson has slammed the makers of mobile games at the ELSPA International Games Summit, claiming many games were of low quality — a fact particularly bad for games based on good licenses. He gave The Lord of the Rings as an example, and concluded: “Consumers aren’t mugs, they won’t keep buying games if they’re that crap!” This might be changing…the BBC ran a story on movie-based games and the fact that movie producers are increasingly working with the games developers to make sure the finished game is something people actually want to buy. This will move to mobiles as well…
He went on to advise game developers to get used to the problem of porting to diverse handsets, as it was an inevitable result of mobile services being differentiated by the handsets they offer. “No consumer changes operator based on content,” he explained. “They change based on price and handset.”
Stats-wise, “games are lower priority than music and TV content on mobile, with only 12 per cent of content customers accessing games on the firm’s portal, major selling titles on the Vodafone network can now expect to sell around 250,000 units across the company’s five European markets”.
