4INFO — an SMS-based mobile search engine — has launched a service that will “allow sports fans to access in-game and post-game statistics from their handsets…Fantasy Sports Stats delivers statistics from recent events to users who text an athlete’s name to the company’s short code. The service, which is free aside from carrier messaging charges, includes results from National Football League and Major League Baseball players, as well as statistics from Professional Golf Association events”. This is probably connected with the deal with ESPN’s sportsticker that was finished a couple of months ago…
The mobile search market is hotting up and becoming increasingly competitive, and innovation such as this are necessary to stand out from the crowd. However, with no revenue stream you have to wonder why 4INFO is launching the service. If it’s just to gain mindshare it could be a good tactic, especially considering the overall use of mobile search is still quite low, according to the article…”If you ask people outside the Silicon Valley what they think about mobile search, it’s not something that even pops into their minds,” Shah said. “We all measure our users in the thousands, not the hundreds of thousands or millions.”
