Efforts to develop a pan-European mobile payments system has come unstuck as one of the founding members of Simpay — the payment system which was first proposed two years ago by a consortium of European operators Orange, Telefonica Moviles, Vodafone and T-Mobile — has decided “not to pursue its activity on pan-European scale as originally planned”. Rumours are rife that the unnamed member is T-Mobile, but Simpay has not confirmed which company it is.
As a result the carriers will use Simpay intellectual property to develop the system on a national scale while keeping international interoperability a goal.
