Yahoo closed its user-created chat rooms this week. Beyond a lawsuit and news reports alleging that some of Yahoo’s chat rooms were being used to prey on children, it may have taken the pressure of advertisers jumping ship to push Yahoo to action. Following reports on Houston TV station KPRC that identified advetisers with ads in the suspect chat rooms, Georgia-Pacific removed all of its ads from Yahoo and Pepsi pulled ads from chat rooms.
I couldn’t find a statement on the move in Yahoo’s company info area or at chat.yahoo.com. A Yahoo spokeswoman told AP the company closed the chat rooms to to make enhancements and to ensure compliance with the site’s TOS.
