MTV is in serious talks to broadcast all or portions of the upcoming Bob Geldof-promoted “Live 8” concert – which, until now, was going to be available only on AOL.com. AOL is not too keen for MTV to get the rights… A chief concern is that viewers would choose to watch it on TV rather than AOL if the performances were shown at the same time.
A possible solution is to air various parts of the concert at different times on different platforms, according to the story.
I would doubt, since AOL is hinging its open-portal relaunch visibility on Live8…
Staci adds: This could work in AOL’s favor on a couple of levels: AOL Music has on-demand rights, not just live performance, so any extra visibility should increase AOL traffic after the events. Also, some kind of cross-promotion likely would be involved, which should send people to AOL’s Live 8 presence and give it a chance to expose people to the new portal.
