Lumitrend
has launched a service for managing mobile content. The three applications allow users to back up their data onto Lumitrend’s web site, synchronize with popular contact lists such as Outlook Express and Yahoo Contacts, and extra storage capacity online for ringtone and wallpaper files that don’t fit on the phone. I assume that more files can be stored off the handset as well…
“Industry research shows 47 percent of cell phone users — including both of Lumitrend’s co-founders — say they suffered a catastrophe at one time where all of their contact information was lost. A Zelos Group study estimates that 15 percent to 20 percent of cellular subscribers might buy data backup services.”
Lumitrend is not the only company offering these backup services and is relying on carrier partnerships for distribution — so far its signed deals with some small regional US carriers and telcos in India, Peru and Mexico. Perhaps when the service runs on Java phones instead of just Brew they’ll do better…
I like this comment from a Gartner analyst: “Monthly fees are driving me crazy. Everybody wants an extra $1.50 from me every month”. That’s true, and it will probably result in services being bundled, for example a mobile music service might want to offer extra storage along with music.
