Optus, Ninemsn Strike Deal

Optus and NineMSN (a joint venture between Microsoft and the Packer-owned PBL) have signed a deal which will see NineMSN “supply content and web-based services to Optus broadband and mobile customers”. “PBL executive chairman James Packer said ninemsn would not engage with other telecom companies on as deep a level as with Optus. “We’ve got a significantly preferred relationship with Optus, and vice-versa,” he said.”
This deal seems to sideline incumbent telco Telstra, which has relationships with NineMSN and other PBL companies as well as Microsoft Australia. Neither Optus nor NineMSN expects short-term financial returns…this is a long-term gig.
