Or, Livetime explained…the story went around the press on the weekend that BT would be launching a series of radio stations for mobile handsets that was portrayed as a battle against Apple, which BT is denying. Anyway, the BBC has a more complete story: Livetime is BTs test of a broadcast TV technology using Digital Audio Broadcasting, the four-month trial will see 1,000 people receive news from Sky and Sky Sports as well as programmes from the Blaze music channel.
Interestingly the testers will be using either a specially-created smartphone or a portable media centre because there are no handsets suitable for using with the technology outside of Korea. Most of Europe is aiming to use the DVB-H broadcasting standard, but the UK has indicated it won’t be releasing spectrum for that before 2008, and BT doesn’t want to wait…
