In UK, British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) will this week unveil plans for a new service allowing customers to download movies and sports coverage over the internet.
The new service, to be launched in the autumn, will pose a challenge to companies including HomeChoice. The sports coverage will consist of highlights, interviews and news, but not whole games or matches. The movie service will offer a mix of 200 new and old films from the Sky Movies channels.
The initiative is likely to be seen as one of James Murdoch’s main innovations since he became Sky CEO in 2003. His appointment was controversial, as he is the son of Rupert Murdoch.
