A study by Digital Tech Consulting has estimated the DRM industry will grow from $600 million worldwide in 2004 to $1.9 billion in 2009, driven mainly by mobile DRM. The study projects that “311.7 million mobile hardware units capable of receiving such DRM-protected content as video and music will be shipped in 2009, up from 17.1 million last year”, representing 41% of all content-protected hardware units that will be shipped in 2009, with growth being driven by the adoption of Smartphones.
The article goes on to cast a shadow of doubt over the report by describing the Open Mobile Alliance DRM as a success, ignoring the current debate over the licence fees. “The study found that users will pay an average of $3.95 per month to receive rich content, with its projections being based on recently announced licensing terms for the OMA DRM of $1 per device and 1% of content transactions.” This has been dropped to 65c per handset and 25c per subscriber per year…
