Google Makes Mobile Search Easier

Maybe each search engine could have their own day for announcements, sort of like DVD Tuesday. The latest enhancement comes from Google, now in beta with a version of its search engine for cell phone users. Choose mobile Web from the Google menu and it searches only pages designed for mobile screens; ie pages in XHTML. Go to Google.com/xhtml and the Google search screen is formatted vertically to fit in a small cell phone window. Google also offers a variation for WML pages — Google.com/markup — but it’s not limited to the WML universe.

What I’m wondering … how many publishers without corresponding commercial mobile offerings, how many of you who aren’t part of the “mobile content world” covered by our sister site MoCoNews.net, are designing mobile versions of your front pages or other content to be more accessible to the increasing numbers of mobile web users? Are we heading to a point where designing a mobile version is a must? Let me know what you think — and please let me know if I can use use your comments for publication.
