Media Owners Call On OFT To Solve Off-Portal Pricing Issues

“Media owners including the Financial Times and Chrysalis are calling for an Office of Fair Trading investigation into the off-portal pricing policies of mobile operators”. The issue is that many carriers have free data usage on their portals, meaning that on-portal content is inherently cheaper than off-portal content. The portals here being the carrier portals… “A lot of companies just getting into mobile content feel they need an operator relationship so users can download content more cheaply, and that’s restrictive.”
Vodafone is apparently considering a move to make off-portal content the same as on-portal, “browsing will be free but the publisher gets less revenue share.”
