After years of patient effort and endless chessplaying, John Malone has pieced together one of the largest broadband services companies in the world. Liberty Global, the result of the merger between Liberty Media International and UnitedGlobalCom, strats trading today on Nasdaq as LBTYA and LBTYB. The numbers: 18 countries; nearly 23 million homes passed; the leading MSOs in Europe, Japan and Latin America with 11 million-plus customers including 2.3 million broadband subs and 1.6 million telephone subs.
Of course, Malone is chairman of Liberty Global, which will be headquartered in Denver; Michael Fries is president and CEO. Malone’s already talking about acquisitions. Meanwhile, here in the U.S., he still has unfinished business with Rupert Murdoch and a possible content deal with Cablevision.
