Audio books and eBooks have been available via library memberships for some time now, but this takes the idea of remote circulation to a new level: OverDrive is launching a VOD service that will allow library patrons with Windows PCs in any location to download digital video on demand. The initial collection, scheduled for launch later this year, includes 1,000-plus educational and self-improvement videos from multimedia publisher Clearvue & SVE. In the press release, Michelle Jeske, a manager from the Denver Public Library, describes it as a “virtual video archives.”
OverDrive already provides audio and eBook access to numerous libraries; a downloadable 700-book mp3 collection for the New York Public Library was announced earlier this week.
