Maybe we could just throw darts and choose the next music-wireless tag team. Napster and Ericsson AB are pairing up on a joint venture to offer “the first complete, fully integrated digital music service available for mobile operators.” According to the press release, the service will be under the Napster brand and will mix pieces of Napster’s PC product and Ericsson’s leading personalized mobile music service. In what may turn out to be the most significant aspect, the new service will support “coordinated wireless and PC downloading of digital music in both subscription and a la carte models.” The plan calls for a live launch in Europe within the next 12 months.
Carl-Henric Svanberg, president and CEO, Ericsson: “We gain access to the biggest digital music brand in the world and exposure to the largest music catalog available, which will not only increase our customer’s consumer offerings and revenues but substantially strengthen their own brand image as well.”
