Forbes:
Swedish wireless telecom equipment maker LM Ericsson said Tuesday that it signed an agreement with Indian telecom company Bharti Tele-Ventures to expand network services into rural India for $250 million.
The agreement calls for Ericsson to provide technology and services to allow Bharti to expand Global System for Mobile Communications and General Packet Radio Service, or GSM/GPRS, into 3,000 towns and villages in 15 regions. GSM/GPRS allows for higher capacity, Internet-based content to be transmitted to mobile phones. The first phase of the expansion begins in July. Bharti provides telecom services to 11.1 million customers, including 10.2 million mobile customers.
