BT Launches Fixed-To-Mobile Service

One UK analyst describes the move as “watershed.” Using IP and a home access point that doubles as a wireless router, BT Fusion subscribers will be able to switch seamlessly between mobile and fixed lines using the same Motorola handset. At home, the phone uses BT; on the go, it’s Vodaphone. The initial launch is limited to 400 subs with a larger roll out slated for fall. Several U.S. cable execs have mentioned this to me as an optimal solution so I expect they’ll be watching this closely as their companies trial various options.
Services like this may also appeal to those who want their mobile phones to be an extension of their personal network with sync, easy downloads and the like — and to content providers looking for ways to provide content to the phone as easily as to an mp3 player.
