Audible, the spoken word downloadable company, launched its UK site today, amidst much fanfare. I was at the evening party at a bar near Bond Street in London. Audible is very bullish on the UK market…CEO Don Katz mentioned that the audio book culture in UK is very strong, as well the likes of BBC radio.
The company is also doing some promotional deals with the likes of Penguin (see below), Stuff magazine (yes…3 free audio books) and another as-yet-unannounced big publisher…
Audible also did a big deal with BBC earlier, and the UK push will offer a lot of that content. In a research note today, S&P Equity Research wrote: “We believe the U.K. market offers significant growth potential, reflecting the notable adoption of digital-audio technology and apparent cultural importance of the spoken word in the country,” the research firm said.
