3 has sold 30 million full version video clips worldwide since the 3G service was launched. “The figure includes both audio tracks, music videos, true tones and ringback tones downloads and streams in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Sweden, Thailand and the UK.”
This is a significant figure, but a drop in the ocean compared with the amount Hutchison has invested to roll out the network…although music isn’t the only revenue stream by a long way. One hampering factor is the range of music available: “3 Music Channel leads the market with the richest music content, offering over 1,300 full-version music videos and audio full tracks of more than 200 international and local pop singers, in addition to over 1,400 MP3/polyphonic ring tones and “Hello” Ring connecting tones”. Mobile carriers, like all digital media vendors, need to take advantage of the “long tail”, and figures in the thousands just don’t cut it. As more and more choices are offered more and more content will be sold…helped with new handsets that will encourage people to listen (and buy) music on them rather than through alternative means.
