MSN To Change Digital Music Leadership

Xbox is one of Microsoft’s pop culture successes. The company needs similar success in the musical arena. Xbox as digital media server could be a key to the latter … so put Xbox and music under the surpervision of the same exec, SVP Robbie Bach. That’s what the WSJ and “people familiar with the matter” say is about to happen, that CEO Steve Ballmer is giving Bach, currently responsible for the Xbox unit and the co-chairman of a consumer strategy, the additional role of top digital music strategist with, among other goals, the mandate of turning the upcoming Xbox into a igital music hub.
The Journal goes into Microsoft’s current ecosystem strategy of licensing its music software to hardware manufacturer and the difference between Apple’s single iPod brand and the multiple hardware devices identified with Microsoft. Xbox, with software and hardware joined together, works against the ecosystem concept.
