Merrill Lynch analyst Laraine Mancini: The announcement “reinforces our belief that as satellite chipset technology evolves, satellite radio will ultimately converge with other mobile media (cellular phone, PDA, MP3, iPod), which should help to broaden the subscriber base … We view this announcement positively for the satellite radio industry, as it marks not just the first wireless agreement for Sirius, but also for the satellite radio industry. We expect similar announcements to follow in the near-term….” She points out that transmission will go through Sprint’s network, making it inexpensive for Sirius to provide its channels but that fture chipsets should enable live satellite radio feeds.
