Despite the advanced state of telecommunications technology in South Korea the authorities have long been suspicious of mobile phones, particularly the ability for minors to access pornographic material. Things seem to have come to a head, with the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office indicting a manager of SK Telecom, the country’s leading mobile telecommunication provider, for “circulating obscene video clips to underage subscribers”.
“The office indicted the SK manager in charge of adult content, identified as Choi, 40, for having released more than 2,000 pornographic files to the firm’s teenage subscribers since November 2002″.
In response, SK Telecom pointed out that “all content had gotten due approval from the authorities…They said that all their subscribers have to go through an adult authorization process to access adult content as required by law”.
