Kitae Lee, the president of Samsung Electronics’ Telecommunications Network Business, has suggested South Korea’s home-grown WiBro (wireless broadband) standard could be the “missing link” between 3G and 4G networks. Like WiMax, WiBro is based on the IEEE 802.16e standard, but unlike WiMax there are solid plans for deployment of WiBro technology in the near future.
“Driving the momentum of Mobile WiMAX technology in Asia, we hope to commercially launch WiBro high-speed data access systems and terminals in Korea next year with data throughput speeds of up to 50 Mbps. Samsung will utilize the experience gained from the Korean WiBro deployment to drive ongoing development of WiMAX equipment for the global market,” said Lee.
This mainly effects mobile content in the way it is presented — many people believe the best way to deliver mobile music and mobile videos to handsets is to stream it on demand rather than storing it on the device, but so far network capacity cannot consistently provide a good end-user experience — this technology could change that.
