Fans hoping to attend the London Live 8 concert on July 2 sent more than two million text messages at £1.50 a pop to enter a ticket lottery. The result: £3 billion ($5.4 million dollars) for the global charity. The 2,060,285 messages set a Guiness record for the “Largest Text Message Lottery.” Winners will hear via a free text message.
The most comparable effort — an Asian New Year tsunami relief fundraiser — produced 726,875 messages also for £1.50
The potential is phenomenal. Would it work at the same level in the U.S.? Probably not yet.
