Carriers Should Step Up Adult Content Protections: Yankee Group

The Yankee Group has claimed US telcos are not doing enough to prevent minors from accessing adult content, claiming that it will cost them far more if the government is convinced to introduce legislation.
“The firm advised carriers to establish a “road map for self-regulation,” advising them to offer comprehensive protection software that parents can easily use, and suggested allowing parents to turn off wireless Web access on their handsets entirely. Also, the Yankee Group said a modest investment in filtering technology now could prove cheaper than potentially costly regulations down the road.”
The American Family Association convinced the Federal Communications Commission to talk to them about introducing regulations on this issue by getting its members to send in 800,000 e-mails…the issue is not going to go away. In the UK government regulation was avoided by the lucky coincidence that an industry code of conduct had been introduced the week before the subject became a political issue, while SK Telecom has actually been indicted for allegedly distributing adult content to minors, despite claiming to follow all the government’s rules on the matter.
