Universal Music has added full-track downloads and music videos to its artists WAP pages, and plans to extend its portfolio of over 300 Websites onto mobiles. “I’ve always believed the likes of Vodafone Live! portals have a limited shelf life,” said Universal Music UK head of new media Rob Wells. “Our direct-to-consumer activity is going live with a WAP focus, extensions of our artists’ Web sites.”
It makes sense — portals such as Vodafone Live are great promotional vehicles but they hold a very limited amount of content. If you want to move the use of mobiles past the promotional and into the viable sales channel you have to be able to make content available for all your artists.
